Alnwick Pubs of 1855

Whilst researching the Tanners Arms in Alnwick I came across the below document, produced no doubt by an avid historian of the town and this formed the inspiration for researching the history of the many pubs that graced Alnwick in the 1850s, many of which are still around to this day... quite a few, sadly are not.

*(the document was posted on Alnwick Memories Community Facebook page back in 2023 by Mike and Debbie Lockwood).

A list of Public Houses in Alnwick c.1855

Some of those that have closed over the last 170 years have been demolished to make way for new development, but a significant number still stand and have been 'repurposed' as retail outlets, private dwellings, holiday homes, restaurants etc. and you can quite easily walk by without giving them a second glance, many of us not realising the part they played in the town's rich history.

1864 Town Plan - Bondgate Tower,
Fleece Inn & Mason's Arms Inn
Excerpts from the old Town Plan from 1864 allow us to see where all the public houses and Inns were located at that time, and throughout the following pages of Alnwick pubs, I will make reference to this to show where they are and to what use they've been put down the years.

If anyone reading this blogs knows of further information about the pubs, has any old photos they'd be willing to share, or notices any inaccuracies, please don't hesitate to let me know. I love coming to Alnwick for holidays but am not a local resident, so my knowledge of the wider history of the town is limited.
